WARNING, GRAPHIC CONTENT: A car accident that took place in Marietta, Georgia in 2004 was the inspiration for one of the best-known scenes in a renowned horror movie
A horrific car crash that happened in Marietta, Georgia in 2004 became the basis for one of the most shocking scenes in a renowned horror film.
The devastating smash unfolded when John Kemper Hutcherson was driving his mate Francis Daniel Brohm back from a pub following a boozing session.
The passenger became nauseous so Daniel poked his head out of the motor’s window moments before Hutcherson veered off the carriageway. Devastatingly Daniel was beheaded by a telephone support wire.
According to reports, Hutcherson travelled 12 miles to his suburban Atlanta residence before he slept in his bloodstained garments. He abandoned Daniel’s decapitated corpse in his lorry.
A Redditor shared with an update on the tale, posting: “I live in the area and used to drive by the spot where it happened on my way to work. I noticed the power company moved the guide wire considerably further away from the road.”, reports the Express.
The incident sparked the film Hereditary which featured a comparable occurrence in its storyline. The film, which was penned and helmed by Ari Aster, was dubbed as the number one horror flick of all time by Dexerto.
Toni Collette received acclaim for her acting in the movie. The narrative centres around a household grappling with bereavement and distress, along with something potentially otherworldly.
But the film’s most disturbing sequence is the portrayal of the dreadful collision, one that seems to be rooted in the aforementioned heartbreaking real-life incident. In the film, a character named Peter takes his sister Charlie to a party where she suffers a severe allergic reaction after eating a slice of cake.
In a rush to get her to hospital, Peter swerves the car to avoid a dead deer, causing Charlie, who had stuck her head out of the window for air, to be decapitated by a telephone pole.
Peter, in shock, drives home without alerting anyone to the horrific incident. The following morning, his mother discovers Charlie’s decapitated body.
As reported by the LA Times, Hutcherson, who was 21 at the time, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Police said Hutcherson was unaware of the decapitation when he returned home and went to bed. A neighbour made the shocking discovery of the body the next morning and alerted the authorities.
Investigators suggested Hutcherson’s blood-alcohol level was likely more than double the legal limit at the time of the accident, impairing his judgement. The victim’s family, who knew Hutcherson as a childhood friend of Daniel, spoke in his defence and requested leniency during his trial.
