A Japanese entrepreneur, Daisuke Hori, has stirred up conversations worldwide with his extraordinary claim of surviving on just 30 minutes of sleep a day for the past 12 years. The 40-year-old from Hyogo prefecture says that by drastically cutting down on sleep, he has increased his waking hours, which has in turn boosted his productivity and work efficiency.

Hori’s journey to becoming an ultra-short sleeper began over a decade ago when he started experimenting with reducing his sleep. Through what he describes as rigorous self-training, Hori has conditioned both his body and mind to function optimally on a mere half-hour of sleep each day.

“As long as you do sports or drink coffee an hour before eating, you can stave off drowsiness,” he said per South China Morning Post.

In 2016, Hori established the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association, where he teaches others how to manage their sleep for better health and productivity. He believes that for professions of doctors and firefighters, the quality of sleep is far more important than the quantity.

His unconventional approach recently caught widespread attention after a reality show titled “Will you go with me?” He was followed by Japan’s Yomiuri TV for three days, and on one of those days, Hori slept just 26 minutes but woke up without any fatigue.

Under Hori’s guidance, the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association has reportedly trained over 2,100 individuals to reduce their sleep needs significantly. One of his students reportedly claimed that she has successfully cut her sleep from eight hours to just 90 minutes a night after undergoing Hori’s training and has maintained her routine since the last four years.
