There have been quite a few times I’ve slept midway through what was supposed to be a binge-watching session. If you’ve experienced this too, what Netflix is working on will certainly help – a sleep timer.

The folks over at XDA Developers have found evidence of a sleep timer in the latest version of Netflix (v 7.82.1) that is now rolling out to Android users. The code of the app contains a new string that suggests that Netflix may soon add a sleep timer to its application.

How this may work is that Netflix will let you set a sleep timer from within the video player UI. Once set, the application will stop streaming the video at the predefined time period and will let you pick up from where you left instead of messing with your watch progress and letting you figure out where you stopped watching.

This feature isn’t activated yet and there’s no assurance that we’ll see the feature roll out to all users worldwide. But given how intuitive it is, I don’t see why Netflix wouldn’t want to roll this feature to all its users worldwide.

Currently, Netflix does ask users if they’re still watching by popping a dialogue box on the screen. But there’s no way to know when the dialogue box will appear and hence it’s limited in its application.

Although, there is an additional feature that can be used to act as a sort of sleep timer. Netflix lets you disable autoplay which means that it won’t automatically play the next episode unless you manually choose to do so. But since this only stops streaming at the end of an episode or a movie, the feature won’t be of much use if you fall asleep before the episode/movie ends.
